Hong Kong recorded 511,311 mainland visitor arrivals during the first two days of the National Day Golden Week holiday, slightly exceeding the total for the same dates in 2018.
Immigration Department figures put arrivals on 1β2 October above the 508,578 recorded eight years earlier. The difference was 2,733 arrival trips, an increase of about 0.5%.
The opening day accounted for 277,304 mainland arrivals, compared with 247,626 on 1 October 2018. Arrivals on the second day fell to 234,007, below the 260,952 recorded on the equivalent date that year.
Figures reported on 4 October showed approximately 221,000 further mainland arrivals on 3 October, taking the first three daysβ total to about 732,000.
The arrival figures count trips rather than individual visitors. Someone entering Hong Kong more than once can therefore be counted multiple times. They also do not show how much visitors spent or whether they stayed overnight.
The two-day comparison provides an early indication of holiday travel volumes. It does not establish whether spending in shops, restaurants or hotels has returned to 2018 levels, or how arrivals across the full holiday will compare.
