The Kowloon Bay section of the Central Kowloon Bypass will open on 6 December 2026, completing the bypass and the 12.5-kilometre Route 6 corridor linking West Kowloon with Tseung Kwan O.
Secretary for Transport and Logistics Mable Chan announced the date on 30 September. She said preparations were in their final stages following testing in recent months, including checks on firefighting equipment, according to Sing Tao’s report.
Once the entire bypass opens, a flat HK$8 toll for all vehicle classes will be collected through HKeToll, according to reporting of Chan’s announcement.
The new section connects the Tseung Kwan O–Lam Tin Tunnel to the east with the bypass’s Yau Ma Tei section to the west. The official project website estimates that peak-hour journeys between Tseung Kwan O town centre and Yau Ma Tei will take around 12 minutes, compared with approximately 65 minutes before Route 6 was built.
That represents an estimated saving of about 53 minutes against the earlier benchmark. Actual journey times will depend on traffic conditions.
Bus passengers are also expected to benefit. Chan previously said the Transport Department had coordinated with franchised bus operators for a total of 20 routes to use Route 6 after its full opening, improving connections between areas including East Kowloon, West Kowloon and Tsuen Wan. Separately, a temporary construction shaft at the junction of Shanghai Street and Kansu Street in Yau Ma Tei is being considered for a new use: an underground public car park with an automated parking system.
The Highways Department’s conversion plan aims to make better use of the shaft’s space and increase local parking capacity. It remains a planned development, rather than a parking facility opening alongside the new road section. Source: HK01
