Hong Kong police have received 1,503 reports of suspected unauthorised credit card transactions linked to orders for new iPhones. The transactions involved more than HK$30 million, Police Commissioner Joe Chow Yat-ming said on 29 September.

Chow told a Kowloon City District Council meeting that all transactions involved had been cancelled. He said cardholders, banks and Apple had incurred no losses from the reported cases. Police are continuing to investigate the suspected fraud network and have asked Apple to review its online transaction process. RTHK reported Chow’s remarks.

According to Chow, the orders were placed using credit card details obtained illegally, without the usual transaction verification in the cases under investigation. That account describes the police’s findings; Apple’s explanation of the payment process has not been independently confirmed in the reporting reviewed.

The number of reports has risen since mid-September, when police had received about 1,200 reports involving roughly HK$25 million. The latest police update puts the total at 1,503 reports and more than HK$30 million. South China Morning Post

Cardholders who notice an unfamiliar charge should contact their card issuer promptly, even if they believe an order may already have been cancelled. The Hong Kong Monetary Authority advises consumers to check transaction records and report suspicious or unauthorised charges to their bank immediately.
