Hotel bookings suggest a busy opening to Hong Kong’s National Day Golden Week, which runs from 1 to 7 October. Travel Industry Council chairman Tommy Tam told RTHK on 28 September that many hotels in popular tourist districts were almost fully booked for 1 to 3 October, even though room prices had risen by double digits for the holiday.
Tam expected more mainland visitors than last year and said businesses including restaurants, retailers and cultural experience providers could benefit. Those were industry expectations ahead of the holiday, rather than measured visitor spending.
On 1 October, the Hong Kong Tourism Association’s executive director, Timothy Chui, also told RTHK that bookings at small and medium sized hotels were nearly full. Separately, the Hong Kong government estimated that about 1.29 million mainland visitors would come to the city during the seven day holiday.
The booking reports point to strong demand at the start of Golden Week. They do not establish how many visitors will ultimately arrive, how long they will stay or how much they will spend. Those outcomes will become clearer as the holiday progresses and official figures are released.
