A tram derailed and mounted the pavement in Shau Kei Wan early on Monday, with almost half its carriage reported to have left the roadway and struck a ground-floor shop.
Police received a report shortly before 1am on 12 October from a resident at 134 Shau Kei Wan Main Street East, according to HK01. Firefighters attended and found the tram off its tracks and on the pavement.
Tram reportedly heading towards terminus
HK01, citing information from the scene, reported that the tram had been returning towards the terminus when it derailed at a bend.
Photographs published by local news outlets show a substantial section of the carriage on the pavement beside shopfronts. Images also circulated on Threads, where users shared reports of the incident.
Both HK01 and Sing Tao reported suspected loose overhead wiring. The cause of the derailment, the condition of the wiring and whether anyone was injured remained under investigation in their early reports.
Emergency crews at the scene
Police and firefighters attended the incident, while Sing Tao reported that people believed to be tram company engineers were inspecting the tracks.
The derailment happened on a narrow stretch of Shau Kei Wan Main Street East, where tram tracks run close to residential buildings and ground-floor shops.
