Commuters using Hong Kong’s Lam Tin MTR station faced disruption on two consecutive days after a trackside fire on 13 October was followed by smoking equipment during the morning rush hour on 14 October.

The second incident prompted the station’s temporary closure, with Kwun Tong line trains passing through without stopping. Shortly before 10am on 14 October, MTR said the situation had been dealt with and services were gradually returning to normal. RTHK’s morning update

Equipment at the station’s platform was reported to be emitting smoke shortly before 9am. MTR and firefighters attended, while free shuttle buses were arranged between Kwun Tong and Yau Tong. KMB also strengthened several bus routes to help passengers affected by the disruption. i-CABLE’s report

The closure came less than a day after a fire beside the tracks at Lam Tin interrupted the evening commute.

MTR said the earlier incident began at about 5.30pm on 13 October. It suspected that a short circuit had caused a piece of insulating material in track-switching equipment to catch fire. Staff responded and called firefighters, who helped extinguish the flames.

Services between Kwun Tong and Tiu Keng Leng were suspended during the incident. MTR arranged free shuttle buses serving Kwun Tong, Lam Tin and Yau Tong, and deployed additional staff to assist passengers.

According to MTR, services began returning to normal at about 6.30pm after safety checks and after the equipment had cooled sufficiently. The operator said it would investigate the cause of the fire. RTHK’s report of MTR’s account

The reports checked do not establish the cause of the smoking equipment on 14 October or whether it was connected to the previous evening’s fire.
