The Chinese University of Hong Kong plans to bid for one of the first three sites earmarked for a university town in Hung Shui Kiu, according to comments attributed to its vice-chancellor, Dennis Lo.
In an interview with Ming Pao reported by RTHK, Lo said research institutes could be a more practical option for the site than building a full university campus.
He also pointed to challenges facing the university’s expansion, including high construction costs and the timing of land tenders.
Research expansion under consideration
The proposed university town forms part of the Northern Metropolis, where the government is planning development across the northern New Territories.
A successful bid could give CUHK space to expand its research activities beyond its existing campus. However, the university’s interest does not mean it has secured a site: no land award has been announced.
The scale and form of any CUHK development would depend on the outcome of the bidding process and subsequent planning.
