Hong Kong’s unemployment rate rose to 3.9% in July–September 2026, while underemployment reached 2%, according to Census and Statistics Department figures reported by RTHK on 22 October.
Both rates increased by 0.1 percentage point compared with the June–August period, when unemployment stood at 3.8% and underemployment at 1.9%.
The government identified more pronounced increases in unemployment in social work, as well as warehousing and support activities for transportation. Increases in underemployment were concentrated mainly in food and beverage services and retail.
The figures show that employment pressures persist in parts of the economy, although the government expects continued economic expansion and tourism growth to support jobs.
Secretary for Labour and Welfare Chris Sun said improving business sentiment and rising visitor arrivals should help sustain employment, particularly in consumption and tourism-related industries.
He added that the government would monitor how external uncertainties could affect businesses’ willingness to recruit and would continue providing support to jobseekers.
