Hong Kong University of Science and Technology has reached a construction milestone for its planned medical school, with its Medical Education and Research Complex topping out ahead of schedule.
The eight-storey building at HKUST’s Clear Water Bay campus will provide teaching and research space for the city’s planned third medical school. The project’s architects said the structure had topped out ahead of schedule.
The university said construction was progressing and that it remained confident of admitting its first 50 medical students in the 2028/29 academic year. That intake is a target, rather than a completed intake, and the programme is still undergoing accreditation. HKUST’s update says its curriculum framework is largely in place and recruitment is continuing.
What happens next?
The complex is expected to be completed in 2028. It will serve as the school’s main teaching and research venue before a permanent campus is built in the Northern Metropolis, according to a government update.
The government says the Medical Council of Hong Kong’s accreditation committee visited HKUST in October. It is also working with the university and Hospital Authority on the longer-term medical school campus and an integrated teaching and research hospital in San Tin University Town.
HKUST has also said it aims to recruit at least 100 professors by 2030, according to RTHK. Recruiting staff, completing the building and obtaining accreditation remain key steps before the school can begin teaching its first cohort.
