Nearly 270,000 mainland visitor arrivals were recorded in Hong Kong by 9pm on Thursday, 1 October, as the mainland’s National Day Golden Week began.
According to Immigration Department figures reported by RTHK, more than 521,000 arrivals passed through Hong Kong’s control points by that time. The Lok Ma Chau Spur Line control point handled the largest number of mainland visitor arrivals.
Total passenger movements exceeded 897,000, including more than 376,000 departures. Among those leaving Hong Kong were over 238,000 Hong Kong residents, with Lo Wu the most-used departure point for residents. Source: RTHK
The figures need to be read carefully: the overall crossing total is not a tourist count, and the arrival total includes people other than mainland visitors. These are also figures through 9pm, rather than a final full-day tally.
The seven-day holiday runs from 1 to 7 October. The Hong Kong government estimated that around 1.29 million mainland visitors would arrive during the week; that remains a forecast rather than a confirmed result. In an update on 1 October, it said major tourist attractions and visitor services were generally operating smoothly. Source: Hong Kong government
