The Weeknd gave Hong Kong fans a surprise at Kai Tak Stadium on Saturday, 24 October, unveiling a song named after the city that samples Faye Wong’s Cantonese classic ‘季候風’, commonly translated as ‘Seasonal Wind’.
The performance came during the opening night of his four-date Hong Kong stop on the After Hours Til Dawn Tour. According to The Standard, the track combines the melody and vocals of Wong’s 1993 recording with the Canadian singer’s R&B sound.
A Hong Kong-themed video accompanied the performance, bringing city streets and harbour views onto the stadium screens. The imagery drew comparisons with the atmospheric visual style of filmmaker Wong Kar-wai.
The combination gives the tribute a distinctly local connection: a familiar Cantonese recording set within a new performance for an international stadium audience.
The video’s director, Evan Larsen, told the South China Morning Post that it was intended as a love letter to Hong Kong. He said the production was completed in about a week before its concert debut, drawing on nostalgia for the late 1980s and early 1990s.
The performance uses a sample of Wong’s existing recording; that should not be confused with confirmation of a newly recorded duet between the two singers.
For fans hoping to catch the remaining concerts, The Weeknd’s official tour website lists further Kai Tak Stadium performances on 30 and 31 October. Kai Tak Sports Park lists the scheduled show time as 8.15pm.
