Hong Kong is targeting the first quarter of 2027 for the formal launch of its central gold clearing and settlement system, as the city develops infrastructure to support a larger international bullion market.

Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury Christopher Hui outlined the timetable in an interview with the South China Morning Post. The same target appears in the government’s 2026 Policy Address.

The planned launch follows trial operations that began on 7 July 2026. The distinction matters: the system is already operating on a trial basis, while its formal launch remains scheduled for next year.

According to Hui’s interview, the platform will combine physical gold delivery with payments linked to the real-time gross settlement system. The arrangement is intended to coordinate the transfer of gold and the associated payment.

The government’s July announcement said the system operates under a wholly government-owned clearing company. Its infrastructure includes a central ledger recording settlement activity, gold transfers and participating banks’ balances, with connections to designated vaults.

The broader programme includes closer links with the Shanghai Gold Exchange, additional storage and refining capacity, and a wider range of gold investment products.

For Hong Kong, the project extends beyond buying and selling bullion. It is intended to build services around custody, settlement, logistics and risk management, strengthening the city’s role in the Asian gold market.

The first-quarter timetable remains a government target, rather than confirmation that the formal launch has taken place.
