Hong Kong’s Department of Health has warned about fraudulent emails and text messages claiming recipients have been exposed to HIV, following suspected misuse of its HIV Testing Service website’s email account.
In its announcement on 24 October, the department said the messages were unauthorised and that it does not notify people in this way. Its investigation had found no evidence of data loss or leakage at that time.
The department said the testing website would be suspended pending cybersecurity checks. Free, anonymous and confidential HIV antibody tests could still be arranged by calling 2780 2211.
Recipients were advised not to open suspicious links or disclose personal information. Anyone who suspects they have been scammed should contact police.
