Lifts in 338 Hong Kong buildings have been found to lack required door-frame components following checks of installations by Taizoom, according to figures published by the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department.

The department’s 19 October results added 186 affected buildings. The components are intended to restrict the spread of fire and smoke into lift shafts.

EMSD says it has completed inspections of buildings under Taizoom’s responsibility. Other registered contractors have also been told to inspect their installations and submit reports, with follow-up sample checks planned.

Remedial installation work will be supervised by the department and paid for by contractors. Building management companies and owners’ corporations have been or will be notified.

The findings identify a fire-protection defect; they do not, by themselves, establish that every affected lift is mechanically unsafe.

EMSD says it is taking regulatory action over Taizoom’s non-compliance, while police are conducting a criminal investigation. No finding of criminal guilt is established by the announcement.
