An elderly man died after being rescued unconscious from a flat fire in Sai Ying Pun on Monday night, 19 October 2026, according to the South China Morning Post.

The fire broke out at Hang Fai Building on Pok Fu Lam Road. SCMP reported that police received the alert at 8.57pm and that firefighters extinguished the blaze at 9.54pm.

The man was taken to Queen Mary Hospital, where he was declared dead at 10.40pm, the newspaper said. It described him as being in his seventies and reported that about 60 residents evacuated.

Other reporting differs on those details: TVB identified the victim as 64 and put the evacuation figure at about 140. Those discrepancies remain unresolved in the reports reviewed.

TVB and Sing Tao reported that firefighters’ preliminary assessment pointed to the kitchen and a possible cooking-related cause, with no suspicious circumstances suspected. That preliminary assessment should not be treated as a final determination of the cause or the circumstances of the death.
